Shrimp Farm

The company has utilized the services of Association of Aqua Culture Technology Consultants (AACT), Calcutta for the farm. AACT has provided technology for prawn culture right from the designing stage of grow-out ponds. AACT is reputed firm in aqua culture technology having, its base at Calcutta and headed by
Dr. A.N. Gosh who was a consultant for United Nations and Managing Director of state Fisheries Development Corporation, West Bengal. He has provided consultancy to some companies, such as East India Prawn Company, Midanpur, West Bengal, Zenith Aqua Estate Pvt Ltd., Balassur, Orissa, Bose N Co Port Canning, West Bengal, Sorcar & Co., Jamtala, Lower Sunderban, West Bengal etc.
Our shrimp farm is located at Vutukuru village. The farm is spread over an area of 105 acres. The farm is about 10 kms away from the hatchery and is located on the estuary of Pennar River. The Farm draws sea brackish water from Pennar sea- mouth, which is at a distance of 270 meters from it.
Shrimp Culture
The success of prawn farm largely depends on the design and construction of the farm, positioning of pump house, feeder canal, drainage canal, pond size, pond inlet and outlet which are to be designed to suit the topography, tidal amplitude, flood and cyclone and level of production. For grow out ponds brackish water from estuary of Pennar river will be used to maintain proper salinity required for L.Vannamei. The various stages are as below.
APond Preparation
The pond bottom is to be ploughed and treated with quick lime suitable to maintain soil ph, then water is allowed into pond and manure and fertilizers are applied.
BStocking
After a week of pond preparation, fry from hatchery are to be stocked uniformly. Salinity of pond water will have to be controlled. The company adopts semi-intensive farming with a stocking density of 50 prawns/sq.
CFeeding
Feeding is done 2 to 6 times a day depending upon stocking density. Periodical sampling of the shrimp is to be done to check the growth rate. The feed includes wet feed like trash fish, frog waste, shrimp head, ground nut/cotton seed oil cake etc. and dry feed in the form of pellets.
DWater Management
Good water quality maintenance is essential to achieve faster growth without any disease. Aerators are also used when stocking density is more than 7 Nos/Sq. for tiger prawn or 12 Nos/Sq. for White Shrimp. The rate of water exchange increases with increase in prawn size and increase in stocking density. For the proposed stocking density, weekly exchange of water is required.
E
Harvesting
Water is drained out through outlet sluice and nearly 90% of stock can be caught by maintaining the proper slope. The prawn is washed thoroughly and preserved in insulated boxes in layers of ice. The harvested prawn from farm will be transported to the processing plant in insulated van.
